Recently Southwest has outlined some pretty extensive changes to the way they do business. Their claimed goal is revenue growth and to reward its most loyal customers. Here is what you need to know:
If you are a Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Member or traveling on a Business Select fare, you will receive two free checked bags. If you are an A-List Member or other select Customer, you will receive one free checked bag. Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will receive a credit for one checked bag. If you do not qualify for these free bag options, you will be charged for your first and second checked bags, subject to weight and size limitations. These changes will apply to flights booked on or after May 28, 2025.
Additionally, Rapid Rewards points earned on qualifying flights have been adjusted. Customers will now earn more points on Business Select fares and fewer points on Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares. The Rapid Rewards loyalty program will also introduce variable redemption rates for flights, depending on demand.
A new Basic fare will be introduced on the lowest priced tickets purchased on or after May 28, 2025. This fare will not include assigned seating or extra legroom options. Flight credits issued for tickets purchased on or after May 28, 2025 will expire one year or earlier from the date of ticketing, depending on the fare type purchased.
If you are a frequent Southwest flyer the solution is simple. Apply for a Southwest Credit Card. Which one fits your needs? See our Southwest Credit Card Comparison.
